A Pleasant Surprise! July 22, 2009 Ann E. Reddy (Alabama) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
To be honest, I was a little reluctant to purchase this book, but our Book Club discussion (and a conference call with Ben Sherwood!) was reason enough to do so!! It was a surprisingly easy and informative read, filled with fascinating facts and statistics as well as heart-warming stories of real people who faced unbelievable hardships and survived. The Survivors Profiler added an extra interactive dimension to the book which has led to thought provoking discussion and the urge to encourage others to read it and participate. I'm still not sure how I would react in a real emergency, but I definitely feel better prepared and more aware of what is going on around me.
Boy Scout Handbook for Grown-ups March 25, 2009 Jo Ana Starr (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great book for anyone to read but I think for Americans in particular, and here's why I say that. We have lived in a fairly safe environment when compared with the rest of the world for so long that I suspect that many of our survival skills may have become rusty. Notable exceptions would include Oklahoma City, Katrina, 9-11, at least one of which immobilized the government as well as some of the participants.
After interviewing survivors to find our how and why they survived their situations, the author shares his findings with his readers. After his extensive research, one of the author's most powerful suggestions is - don't go brain-dead with the shock of what you're seeing or experiencing. "Take action and stay conscious". There are many more, but this one struck me as something I want to remember, in case of an emergency.
Hopefully, you'll never encounter any of the crises that the author addresses, but this thought-provoking book is worth a read just in case. I believe that the "walk-through" of many crisis situations that The Survivor's Club offers the reader as well as solutions on how to survive may be the best possible preparation for dealing with the unthinkable. The book is highly recommended.
Not My Usual Summer Reading, But a Hit Nevertheless! July 21, 2009 Angela Dickert (Alabama) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When my book club chose Ben Sherwood's The Survivors Club as our book of the month, I knew I would learn valuable information, but I wasn't eager to read the book. As a high school English teacher, I read so much during the school year that I look forward to the relaxing "beach reads" over the summer, the ones that don't make me think. How refreshing it was for me to read this novel that not only changed my way of thinking but also kept me eager to turn the pages! The Survivors Club is a perfect blend of stories of real people who have survived against all odds and valuable survival strategies meticulously researched by the author. I have never considered myself to be a physically strong person, but after reading this novel I learned that what I can do is be more aware of my surroundings and possible dangers, therefore strengthening my chances of surviving anything that comes my way. Because "everyone is a survivor," I should be proactive and never assume a situation is hopeless. I have not stopped talking about what I have learned and have highly recommended it to my husband and all my friends. My book club eagerly awaits Sherwood's next novel.
Survivor's Club anyone can join. March 1, 2009 Deborah Giordano (Salt Lake City) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Excellent book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has ever wondered how they would react in an emergency such as a plane crash, car wreck, fires, etc. This book gives you tools to help you survive. Mr. Sherwood explains why, in an emergency, most of us don't know how to react, so we do nothing. Seconds count in an emergency, so we need to act quickly but we also need to act correctly.
Emergency drills and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) have helped me as a nurse practitioner, learn to respond to emergencies more calmly and correctly. Practicing helps our brains to go into an automatic rescue mode instead of panic. That is the heart of the lesson Mr. Sherwood teaches here.

When I heard about this book I immediately ordered it. I wa not dissapointed in its contents. The Survivors Club gave insight on what can happen in the blink of an eye. I do alot of travelling, though I do pay attention to the tv screen on the safety features of the plane, I never read the card, somethiing I will difinetely do now. I will also be more aware of what's around me. The Surviors Club is a must read book.
