A MASSIVE STORY OF CHARACTER AND A CAUSE September 7, 2009 Guitar Fan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's amazing how often we see the faces of our founders on money and used in advertisements to represent credibility and prosperity, but until we read books like the American Classic Series (Washington, Jefferson and the Ben Franklin book), we really have no idea how worthy these people are of our respect and praise. Find out what you didn't learn in school. Read this series of National Center of Constitutional Studies books and know that this information is credible. As someone who grew up where MANY of Washington's battles were fought, I was stunned to read about all of it in this book because it was never mentioned in school! For anyone who feels like our country has lost its way, these three books and The 5000 Year Leap are loaded with information that explains the intended path, the reasons it was chosen and how to stay on it, despite the obstacles and deceit, which by the way, the founders warned us about.
The Most Influential Man in American History! September 19, 2009 Christopher Bullis (Ilion, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Washington's life is a great story that had an even greater impact on the direction of the USA. Although at times a pinch shallow on the detail... when taken in the scope of the 613 pages of his life's story and the additional 300 pages of topical quotes, it is understandable that some of the stories weren't peppered with all of the near-unbelievable details. This was an amazing and delightful read.
Patriotism Defined November 16, 2009 William L. Welsh 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sadly, I had long forgotten the details of this nations simple, humble beginnings and the major role played by George Washington. I am so grateful to the author for presenting the birth of our nation and the life of George Washington in clear, concise and understandable writing. This book has renewed my patriotic senses and appreciation for the roots of this great country. We hear a lot of double talk these days about patriotism but few really conceive of the true meaning.
I highly recommend this extraordinary book.
I never really knew President Washington... March 22, 2009 Molly Peters (CA, United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The only reason I started reading this book was because of my brothers recommendation, I have never been a big non fiction reader. But after falling in love with his last recommendation I decided I better give old George a chance. As I read this book I soon realized that I did not know much about the father of our country beyond the myth of chopping down the cherry tree, that he was the head of the army during the revolutionary war and our first president. I now understand what a truly amazing person President Washington was, how he really was the father of this great country and the office of the president. What made this book enjoyable however, is how it focuses on the man's own words, letting him tell his story as much as possible. I would recommend every citizen read this book if they are familiar with the life of our first president, and this should be required reading in all High school history classes. I hate to admit it but my brother has good taste in reading!
A hero, portrayed as one. December 30, 2009 john washington 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is book was a pleasant surprise. I recently finished reading His Excellency by Joseph J. Ellis and was let down, I don't recommend it. Ellis' work is sterile and cynical. It accentuates Washington's flaws, and makes a point of deconstructing one of our nations heroes. I wanted a book with all the information but without the agenda. I didn't want the author to stand out more than the subject. I found what I wanted in The real George Washington.
It's a large volume, over 900 pgs. (The last 300pgs or so are texts and excerpts written by Washington himself) but the book isn't unwieldy. It's thick, but not the dictionary-size I thought it would be, it's about 8 x5 inches, a perfect size for easy reading. The text is on the large side and there are paintings, maps and letters scattered throughout. It ended up being a very quick read.
